Sligo Cumann na mBunscol

Hard luck to our team who were not successful this year in the  Cumann na mBunscol 1/2 Teacher Mixed Final in Markievicz Park on Saturday 16th June.  We were playing Kilrusheighter N.S. in the County Final for the third year in a row.   It was third time lucky for Kilrusheighter....but some famous last words.........WE'LL BE BACK!!!!

This is what Diarmuid (2nd Class) had to say:

On Saturday 16th of June, our school played in the Cumann na mBunscol Final in Markievicz Park in Sligo.  It was a Gaelic match.  The ref tossed a coin in the air to see who wore the green and yellow jerseys because Kilrusheighter N.S. and our school both had blue and white jerseys.  We had to wear the green and yellow jerseys.  I played in the 2nd half. At the end of the match, Kilrusheighter won. We got silver medals and Kilrusheighter N.S. got gold medals and the shield.  After, we went to McDonald's. It was great fun for my first time playing.

Cloonloo Honours Sr. Marguerite O'Beirne

On the first of July, St. Ronan's National School, Cloonloo, will honour Sr. Marguerite O'Beirne OSF, one of its most celebrated past pupils.  The day will begin with a tree planting ceremony, followed by a mass at 1.30 p.m. and then the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and some refreshments.  There is an open invitation to all members of the local community and past pupils of the school.

Sr. Marguerite is the Vice President of Neumann University in Pennsylvania.  She has made a huge contribution to education in the U.S.A. and is regarded as one of the top Irish/American Educators.  She has received numerous awards and honours ranging from Ancient Order of Hibernian Woman of the Year to St. Patricks Day Parade Grand Marshal.

Sr. Marguerite is very proud of Cloonloo National School where her formal education began, "A school that has been a vital part of the community and that has helped to shape the lives of so many down through the years." Her life as an educator had its beginnings "under the compassionate care and expert educational direction of the school mistress, Mrs. Crummy".

Sr. Marguerite has agreed to become an ambassador for Cloonloo N.S. because she believes, "education is an effort of a community to recreate itself with the rise of each new generation and to perpetuate itself in historic time.  The local school is vital for the long term good of the larger community."

Fun with Magnets

The Junior Room have been learning about magnets in Science. We designed and made a magnetic fishing game.  We explored which materials are attracted to magnets and which materials are not.  We investigated if magnets work through materials such as wood, glass, plastic and paper.  We experimented with the strength of different magnets and found out that bar magnets are the strongest. We finished our work on magnets by mading some fridge magnets.

Green School Tour to the Arigna Mines

We went to the Arigna Mines on Tuesday 29th of May. It took us around 40 to 50 minutes to get there.  It was a long trip.  When we got there we watched a video of the men working in the mine.  After the video we got a tour round the mine. We saw water that had tons of iron in it.  We saw lots of tools in the mine.  Our favourite part of the tour was the explosion, the way the light flashed and the scary explosion noises.  We went to the wind farm too. The German windmills and the Spanish windmills are 60 metres high.  We enjoyed our tour to Arigna Mine and the wind farm.

By Diarmuid Dowd

A day ago we went to the Arigna Mines. We had a tour guide in the mine.  It was dark but lights were on.  We saw a video of all the men working.  They had to go through the narrow shafts. The mine was in Iron Mountain.  We saw water with iron in it.  We made all the lights go off and when we did, it made an explosion noise. How we did it was by pushing down a detonator. We had to wear hard hats for falling rocks. After that we went to the gift shop.  Then we went to the wind farm.We saw wind turbines. They were 60m high.  There were 90 of them altogether.  There were German ones and Spanish ones.

We all went to Arigna Mines yesterday.  We went on the bus.  We got out an hour later.  We had to wear hard hats in case of an accident.  The tour guide used to be a worker in the mines but it was not Arigna Mine. We saw a wall of coal.  A few minutes later we went into the shafts.  We saw some water that was full of iron.  We saw a motor that was for pulling the coal trucks.  We all went up into a small corner. We saw a detonator.  The tour guide said "Do you want to blow something up?". Everyone said yes and everyone got a go.  The lights went out and there was a loud sound.  There were a lot of strange rocks.  Then we went to the wind farm and we saw massive wind turbines.  They were 60m high. There were 90 of them.  There were German ones and Spanish ones.

We got everything packed up, then we went to Arigna in a bus.  First we went to Arigna Mines.  We looked at some mining tools.  Then we watched a film of people mining.  After we met a lady.  She gave us hair nets and hard hats.  We saw a digger.  Then a man brought us around the mine.  First he showed us a hole that a miner had to squeeze through.  Then we saw the air drill.  It was very heavy.  Then the tour guide let us blow up the wall.  When we did it, the lights went off. Then we saw "Santa's House".  We went to the gift shop.  We had lunch.  Then we saw the windmills. The German and Spanish ones were 60m tall.  There were 90 of them.  Then we went home.

Easter

We had great fun on the day we got our Easter Holidays.  The children in the Junior Room played games such as Bunny Hopping, Easter Egg and Spoon Races and Easter Egg Rolling.  The whole school came together then for an Eater Egg Hunt. The Junior Room had to find Easter eggs on the pitch.  We made it a bit harder for the Senior Room who had to find eggs hidden under cones without touching the cones with their hands.  Every child in the school also got an Easter Egg to bring home.

National Tree Week 2012 by Eoin Dowd

Last Friday (March 9th ), Thomas Crummy came to our school to plant an apple tree. We took turns to dig a hole.  We used fertilizer to put on top. Nikita put the stake beside the tree and tied it.  We dressed in camouflage to hide in trees. We used greens and browns. We got our faces painted.  Parents and my Granny came to see us.  We got photographs taken.  It was a really fun day.  Even my Granny enjoyed it.  I think we should plant a tree every year for National Tree Day
